This quarter’s workshops are starting up again with fire! The first one will be this Tuesday at 8 pm in University Hall 218.
This quarter, every other week will be a peer editing workshop, and the alternating weeks will be themed discussions, such as line breaks in poetry. Come check it out! (Be sure to bring 3 to 4 copies of your work, no longer than 2 pages of poetry or 5 pages of prose.)
Here’s a recap of what we do at our workshops:
We split into groups of four or five people and go around the circle workshopping. The author reads their work aloud. Then the listeners tell them what works for them and what doesn’t work. The best way to give constructive criticism is to say what doesn’t work, why, and suggest how it can be fixed. It’s not about personal taste and whether you like the story or not; it’s about whether the story (or poem or essay) works. Workshopping can be stressful, but at Prompt we try to keep it very relaxed and friendly. Come expecting to walk away with suggestions on how to make your piece even better, and you will be satisfied!
